As part of our active contribution towards safety, reliability and innovation in New Zealand’s electricity industry we are proud to co-sponsor this year’s EEA Annual Power Engineering Exchange (APEX) Summit.

The Apex Summit is a showcase for graduate engineers involved in power supply projects, as well as students interested in a career in the industry, to present technical papers.  It is to be held at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch on 18 August 2017.

The APEX call for abstracts is now open and the theme is “Powered by Data.” We believe data is the key to unlocking the smart network, and maximising the long-term value of traditional assets.

Hiko supplies the GridKey low voltage network monitoring system, that can be retrofitted to LV substation feeders without interrupting supply to customers. GridKey provides continuous remote monitoring and real time warnings, status and load information.

By using GridKey, Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) can reduce maintenance costs and improve their knowledge of the state of the LV network. One British DNO is quoting an 8% uplift in network capacity from using GridKey. By monitoring they can push closer to the actual ratings of their transformers and cables.

At last year’s APEX Summit, the Hiko Power Engineering team was delighted to see our undergraduate Tiantian Xiao present on our thermal modelling and testing of underground service connection boxes.  Tiantian now works as a protection engineer at Beca in Christchurch.
